Hydatid Cyst Treatment (Or Echinococcosis), Causes, Symptoms, Investigations
Hydatid Cyst Causes:
Cystic hydatid disease- Echinococcus granulosus- eating contaminated food by canine feces with parasite eggs in it. Transmitted from domestic dogs. Cyst location- liver (65%), lungs (25%), brain, bones, skeletal muscles, spleen, kidneys, etc.
Alveolar hydatid disease- Echinococcus multilocularis.
Hydatid Cyst Symptoms:
Usually asymptomatic.
Abdominal or chest pain, cholangitis, biliary obstruction, cirrhosis, portal hypertension.
Bronchial obstruction causes segmental lung collapse & abscesses.
Cyst rupture- severe allergic reaction, fever and hypotension.
Hydatid Cyst Investigations:
Serum IgG Echinococcus granulosus.
Serologic tests( ELISA and immunoblot).
USG, CT, MRI of affected area- show cyst.
Hydatid Cyst Treatment:
Tablet Albendazole 400 mg Two times in a day(BD), (10-15 mg/kg/day) for >/= 3 months. Or
Tablet Mebendazole (40–50 mg/kg/day) Or
Praziquantel.
Percutaneous aspiration-injection-reaspiration (PAIR)- for inoperable cysts but 2% risk of anaphylaxis.
scolicidal agents (hypertonic saline, 95% ethanol, hypertonic saline, 0.5% cetrimide)
Alveolar cyst disease- surgical resection.
